The record production studio with new KRK VXT6's

Some time back the RP phone rang and a nice chap from KRK asked if they could use the photo we took of Chris Young at Chestnut Studios for some promotional use.  It’s always tough knowing how much to ask so remembering that we have some VXT4′s thought it would be worth chancing our arm to ask for some 6′s.  Much to our surprise, a few days later two big and very heavy boxes arrived and the 4′s were unplugged and replaced with the 6′s.  I was half dreading how they would sound, I was at a studio with some a while ago and they didn’t do it for me very much and a few producers turned their noses up when I mentioned they were coming.  VXT 4′s always seemed to sound good wherever I’ve heard them.

That was several months ago and since then the KRK’s have been our monitors in our small studio (pictured above – but now much better) for video editing, music playback etc etc.  We’ve got used to them and really enjoy the output.  The DAC we’re using is rather embarrassing but in our small studio the sound quality is impressive, mixes that I did years ago have new things show up that I’d not heard before!  The overall sound is full, detailed and responsive.  Listening via iTunes to the music library I’ve had to roll off the high’s a bit, then I realised the HF Adjust toggle was set to +1.  Switching it to -1 made it perfect!   The mids are very accurate, I can understand why KRK’s are used by so many mix guys.  Low end is very tight, it reaches right down but yes, a sub would be ideal.

The level of controls are much better than I’d have expected and the HF and LF adjust toggles make for real and useful flexibility.  The limiter is a very good thing to have (switchable) and the auto mute/power down is good but found it too keen to shut down so have that bypassed.  The earth lift solved some issues we were having with the DAC and can’t wait to hear them through something better.

Anyway, the reason I thought I’d write my mini review is because I’ve had a few other sets of monitors to try out in this room over the last day and the quality of the KRK’s blew the others away (no names mentioned).  For the last listening test the wife was asked in to see what she thought, monitor ‘A’ vs the KRK’s.  She had no trouble figuring out which was the better speaker, not that we needed her input but sometimes it’s nice to check you’re not getting too zoned in.  In my book, the KRK’s sound great and if I’d paid full price would still think that I’d got myself a bargain.  The wife wants me to buy a pair for the living room now.
