Edd Hartwell video feature with George Shilling

We met up with ex-SARM Studios engineer Edd Hartwell at George Shilling’s studio to chat about his recording methods and we were keen to find out how serving an apprenticeship under such legends as Trevor Horn and Steve Lipson has shaped his career so far.

Edd started his musical career playing guitar and saxophone in bands until a love of recording studios and sound engineering was discovered. Edd has worked with the likes of Tony Visconti, Guy Massey, Stephen Lipson, Jim Abbiss and Trevor Horn on a regular basis, racking up UK number 1 albums and a Grammy nomination for best engineered album. Credits include The Noisettes, Ed Sheeran, Jeff Beck, The Kooks, The Prodigy, Kt Tunstall and Yes, amongst others.

Stuart Bruce began his recording career at London’s SARM studios under the tuition of legendary engineers Gary Langan and Julian Mendelsohn. He worked as an assistant with artists such as Dollar, ABC, Malcolm McLaren, The Undertones, Monsoon, Echo and the Bunnymen, Simple Minds, Tears for Fears, The The, Nik Kershaw, the Belle Stars, Spandau Ballet and Trevor Horn’s own band The Buggles.

Since then, Stuart has had an amazing recording career, highlights include recording the Band Aid single. We met up with Stuart at his private recording studio near Bath, England, and as there was so much ‘interesting stuff’ we have kept the feature quite long – we think it’s well worth watching all the way as it’s the only way to find out who Status Quo locked in the toilet by watching all the way through…..

George Shilling took some time out of his holiday and visited Jake Jackson at Air Studios with the camera crew in August 2011 to find out how he has got on since winning the ‘Breakthrough Engineer’ award at The Music Producers Guild (MPG) Awards at the end of 2010.

Jake joined Air Studios in 1998 working on sessions with some of the most acclaimed composers in the world, now a freelance engineer in his own right, he is first choice for many composers because of his reputation as an excellent orchestral and band recording and mix engineer.

Encompassing all recording genres, his work includes, Nick Cave & Warren Ellis’s score to The Road, which he produced, recorded and mixed, and A R Rahman’s 127 hours. He has worked with Murray Gold for the last three years and their work together includes the scores for Doctor Who.

Danton Supple – New Video Interview

George Shilling visited Danton Supple with the camera crew on a sunny day in August 2011 to find out how he has got on since our last feature with him over five years ago. In that time Danton has gone on to produce some mega massive smash hit albums for artists such as Cold Play and we think that this is proof that being featured here on RecordProduction.com is good for business

Danton continues to build upon the success of his production and mix work with COLDPLAY and has recently set up his own mix room in the Battery Building where he has been mixing albums for SOULSAVERS, album tracks for IAN BROWN’s finest album to date ‘My Way’ and NATALIE IMBRUGLIAs latest long player. Danton also mixed AMY MACDONALD’s second album ‘A Curious Thing’ (A-listed at BBC Radio 2) as well as producing a solo album for Fightstar frontman, CHARLIE SIMPSON and an album by new artist THE GADSENS.

George Shilling visited Parisian born and classically trained Dimitri Tikovoi with the camera crew to talk with Dimitri who has recently produced records for Rosie Oddie fronted band Oddysey and a beautifully crafted sonic masterpeice for The Irrepressibles.

Dimitri also recently produced tracks for The Young Knives and The Pangs. Apart from putting the finishing touches to his own very solo project Trash Palace, Dimitri is currently writing with Spanish diva Lantana, Sophie Ellis Bextor, new tracks for the face of Maxfactor Maya of Soho Dollsand the incredibly talented and new Atlantic signing Charli XCX.
