Can a mic stand be sexy?

We met Oliver Morley of Bigger Boat Distribution at Wincraft Studios, UK, and he showed us the rather amazing Latch Lake micKing 3300 mic stand.  It has a massive range and can extend to about 7 metres, has the ability to attach additional booms and has a very solid wheeled base.

Normally we don’t bother paying much attention to stands but as seen in the second video featuring ace MPG award winning engineer James Towler, the stand is hugely adaptable and flexible plus a complete drum kit can be mic’d up with just two stands.  This is very useful if you’re recording live or cameras are likely to be used and they can be wheeled away for quick storage rather than breaking down zillions of stands.

Recording drums in live situations, at gigs or possibly with the whole band recording together in the same room presents problems not encountered in the usual recording studio environment.  You frequently need different microphones, special stands to be sure that the view or cameras aren’t blocked etc etc.  These days the luxury of a mobile truck are gone for many and recording direct to Pro Tools etc is the norm.  James Towler is an expert working in studio and recording live, he won the 2008 MPG award for best live recording and has had further MPG and Grammy nominations.
