Dean Street Studios, set in the heart of London’s Soho, has a long history as a recording studio.  Quite some time ago it was owned by legendary record producer Tony Visconti and in those days was named Good Earth Studios.  Today, 5th Feb 2010, the studio celebrated its latest update with a Duality console replacing the AWS 900 with a great party.

We plan to bring a video tour around the studio and interviews with studio owners Jazz (pictured with studio dog) and Ben in the next month.  We love Dean Street Studios, great vibe and more guitar cabs than you can shake a stick at plus a brand new Mellotron!  The studio is awash with funky instruments, some previously owned by George Harrison etc.  Meanwhile, check out our photo gallery of the studio.

Since we take so many photographs of producers, studios and musicians I thought I’d start a photo of the week ‘thing’.  Each week a randomly selected photo that I’ve taken and think is interesting enough to share will be added, and will duck while the comments about poor exposure or wrong aperture flood in :)

This week’s star photo:  Chris Jenkins.

Chris is one of the most influential console designers and in his time at SSL has been the brains behind the Duality, AWS 900, C200, C100 etc etc.  He has worked at the BBC and was one of the early key people at the famed Townhouse Studios where he was the man that helped make that Phil Collins drum sound the Phil Collins Drum Sound.

Ace engineer and producer Pat Dillett talks on camera at the fab Germano Studios NYC.  Germano has two SSL Duality consoles and Pat works there most of the time which is why we nipped in to ask about his work during a break.

If you need a great studio to record or mix in but are on mid budget – check out Modern World!  It’s a great studio.

They’re in the Cotswolds but not much more than an hour from London.  They have an SSL Duality, two great recording rooms, massive guitar collection, accommodation and loads more – plus a very, very great vibe.  Call to pay them a visit, say you heard about them from us and get a FREE cup of tea :-)

We shot this video over a year ago but it’s about time that we added it!
