Recording Engineer Edd Hartwell

We met up with ex-SARM Studios engineer Edd Hartwell at George Shilling’s studio to chat about his recording methods and we were keen to find out how serving an apprenticeship under such legends as Trevor Horn and Steve Lipson has shaped his career so far.

Edd started his musical career playing guitar and saxophone in bands until a love of recording studios and sound engineering was discovered. Edd has worked with the likes of Tony Visconti, Guy Massey, Stephen Lipson, Jim Abbiss and Trevor Horn on a regular basis, racking up UK number 1 albums and a Grammy nomination for best engineered album. Credits include The Noisettes, Ed Sheeran, Jeff Beck, The Kooks, The Prodigy, Kt Tunstall and Yes, amongst others.

APRS events sound like they may be a little less exciting than many music industry events but in actual fact the APRS Awards are one of these events that we look forward to every year.  This year was the best ever and the cast of people on stage collecting or giving awards were the Who’s Who of the recording industry (in the UK anyway):  Sir George Martin, Peter Gabriel, Trevor Horn, Robin Millar, Rupert Hine etc etc.  Videos from people who couldn’t make it included Bob Clearmountain.

THE HUGE SLIDESHOW OF PHOTOS OF THE EVENT

The APRS hold monthly events and becoming a member is very affordable and the benefits seem to be many but being able to network with the people who’s climbed up to the top of the industry is the most worthwhile in our book as the help and inspiration they can give is invaluable.  Take a look at the APRS website here.

An interesting article by the Guardian’s Helienne Lindvall who reported the event is here.

Wow! Check out this short video tour of the grounds of the studio Trevor Horn used to own that has now re-opened following a full refurbishment.

Nurse!  More bandwidth please!

Trevor has recently produced Robbie Williams’ new album so we kind of expected to see a load of traffic but this is crazy.

In under two weeks we’ve had 30,000+ plays of Trevor’s interview with Nigel Jopson at SARM Studios London.

To show we’re not cheating the following is an extract from today’s stats.  The pt 2 makes the total add to the 30k+ views.

Any offers of cash to pay for the server excess charges are welcome!!!!!!  :-)
