Studio Arnold Murhen
Arnold Murhen Studios offer a unique family atmosphere to record in. Located near to Amsterdam in the picturesque seaside town of Volendam, the studios owner (Arnold Murhen) tells us the traditional dress one associates with Holland originates here and the area has been popular with artists for centuries.
We paid a brief visit as the studio was setting up for a session recently. Arnold's son, Patrick, is generally behind the controls of their recently installed SSL MT digital console but as he'd only just finished a marathon session we were sadly unable to talk with him. Arnold kindly took us on a tour of the facilities and we are pleased to bring a short video which was shot using our tourists camera and sadly not our new much better camera. Hopefully we will produce a higher quality tour sometime soon but at least this video gives a flavour.
Finding Arnold's studios is very easy. We took a bus and the driver asked where we were going. He knew Arnold and exactly where the studios were then insisted on dropping us outside the door which was a slight detour from the published route! From central Amsterdam the trip took about half an hour. Anyone who speaks English will have no problems here or indeed anywhere in Holland, so, if you want to get away to concentrate on a project and be close to all of the attractions that Amsterdam has, call them!
Completely unique in style and character the studios feature the latest SSL MT digital console with a good range of microphones and outboard gear. The effects rack is pivoted so it can slide behind the engineer or pushed away when not needed.
The studio area features several areas that have adjustable fixed booths to create a very flexible recording environment.
A producers or writing room is also available and is above the main studio.
There are plenty of guest bedrooms and there is a wonderful rest room decorated with original pictures of the surrounding landscape and characters, some date back over 100 years.
Entertainment in Volendam is more of the relaxing 'take a walk' sort. For nightlife, head to Amsterdam which is very close by!
Many thanks to Arnold and his staff for taking the time to look after us and show us around!
